Intro to Winter Mountaineering 1:2 Three days of classic Scottish winter mountaineering! Your first day will start by learning the basics of winter mountaineering; this will include basic rope technique, building snow pack belays and snow analysis. We will also brush up on ice axe arrests and correct crampon techniques. The following two days we will aim to get onto grade I/II terrain. Conditions permitting we will aim to travel on both ridges and gullies to experience the different techniques needed for the changing Scottish terrain. Arrival Time 0830 Base location Our Intro to Winter Mountaineering course will be held in the West Highlands of Scotland. Fort William will be our base location which will give us plenty of opportunity to use very accessible mountain venues such as Glencoe and Aonach Mor. Full details will be sent out with confirmation of your booking. Previous experience The Scottish hills can be a harsh environment so please come prepared to be out on the hill in the winter weather. Prior knowledge of rope skills are not a requirement, you will be taught from scratch on this course. You will however need some winter walking experience, particularly ice axe and crampon technique as we will be stepping it up a gear over the three days to gather as much mountaineering knowledge as possible. A good level of fitness will enable you to get the most out of your holiday. Cost Includes The course fee includes instruction, technical equipment and transport from base location to daily venue. It does not include accommodation; guests can then make their own arrangements depending on personnel budget. We have limited amounts of ice axes available so please get in touch if you wish to hire anything well in advance of your course date.
