This course is designed to equip the hill walker with the tools to independently travel through Scottish winter terrain. Throughout the day you will learn correct boot, crampon and ice axe techniques, self arrest and winter route planning (conditions permitting); it will not cover the use of ropes. |
Our three day winter walking course aims to initially teach the basic winter skills needed to safely travel through Scottish Winter terrain such as; correct boot, crampon and ice axe techniques, self arrest and winter route planning (conditions permitting). |
This one day course will look at the principles of what it takes to tackle basic, technical winter terrain. Over the day you will learn basic rope and belay techniques for example; building snow pack anchors and taking body belays. We will also look at avalanche avoidance and snow analysis. We will not neglect to brush up on ice axe arrests and correct crampon techniques. |

Three days of classic Scottish winter mountaineering! Your first day will start by learning the basics of winter mountaineering; this will include basic rope technique, building snow pack belays and snow analysis. We will also brush up on ice axe arrests and correct crampon techniques. The following two days we will aim to get onto grade I/II terrain. |
Whether it is your first winter Munro or your last, Ben Nevis or Stob Ban, we will endeavour to provide you with a full on winter experience on the mountain of your choice. Correct crampon and axe technique will be covered on route to the summit of one of Scotland’s fine winter mountains. |
We start our four days instruction by teaching or polishing our winter walking skills. We will cover cutting steps, boot and crampon technique, ice axe braking and snow evaluation.
